People with special needs are affected each and every day they live by how society relates to them and Georgian society has a long way to go before it is a positive environment for people with disabilities. First Step Georgia is at the forefront of efforts to improve the attitude of Georgian society to disability. We hope that through our efforts Georgian society will become a much more understanding, progressive and supportive place for people with disabilities.

First Step Georgia has a number of initiatives designed to help society understand disability.

These include:

  • Providing society with information about issues and problems associated with disability
  • Demonstrating ways to handle disability and providing information about the rights of people with special needs.
  • Creating a more comfortable environment for people with special needs
  • Supporting other organizations working in this field
  • Mobilizing social resources for society to help people with special needs become valuable members of Georgian life

So far these initiatives have been implemented in a variety of ways. First Step Georgia designed and calendars and posters with the slogan, ‘Help me make the first step’ and distributed them for free among individuals and organizations working with First Step Georgia; weekly discussions about disability air over the course of one month each year on Georgia’s Radio One;  television spots about issues related to disability were shown on the country’s state tv station in Spring 2009. Finally, in 2008 Georgia’s Radio One, in collaboration with First Step Georgia ran a season of five programmes looking at the issue of disability in Georgia – an initiative which will be repeated in 2009.

You can see our tv spots, calendar and poster.
