 Main modules of the training course: 

  1. Principles of care and service for disabled people

Goal of the module: providing trainees with information on disabled people, appraising them of the main goals and methods of care, developing their practical skills (care, teaching and development) to work with disabled people.

Content of the module: types and classification of disability, principles and methods of care, development psychology, forms of violence and their prevention, formation of behavioural patterns, constructive relationship with parents/caregivers, effective communication, stress management.

Duration of the module: full course – 5 working days. The duration of the course may be changed as needed.

After completing the module, the trainees will be able to:

  • Deliver adequate and quality service for disabled people;
  • Develop adequate communication forms;
  • Create a therapeutic and stimulating environment;
  • Identify and fulfil needs.
  1. Client-Centered Service

Goal of the module: development of positive attitudes to disability, getting to know a person with special needs, identification of each individual’s particular interests and abilities, and development of a person-centred plan.

Content of the module:

  • Reviewing and comparing social and medical models;
  • Five valued experiences (dignity, relationships, choices, ordinary places, contribution);
  • Difference between individual and mass planning;
  • personl-centred planning.

Duration of the module: full course – 2 working days. The duration of the course may be changed as needed.

After completing the module, the trainees will be able to:

  • Deal and work with disabled people in a dignifying manner;
  • Develop a person-centred plan.
  1. Preparation of individual educational plan (IEP) and an individual service plan (ISP)

Goal of the module: preparation and management of an individual educational plan and an individual service plan, strengthening the role of parents/caregivers in assessing the child and selecting the goal. Methods of working towards achieving the goal.

Content of the module:

  • Individual service plan;
  • Individual educational plan.

Duration of the module: full course – from 3-10 working day. The duration of the course may be changed as needed.

After completing the module, the trainees can:

  • Correctly plan and run IEP and ISP;
  • Work well in team;
  • Have the opportunity to make their contribution towards assessing and caring for the child;
  • Develop the skills to work with disabled people;
  • Get to know and correctly assess a person;
  • Choose functional and educational goals in consideration of the child’s capabilities and needs;
  • Develop and plan methods and strategies towards achieving the goal.
  1. Management of challenging behaviour

Goal of the module: understanding behaviour formation, and understanding the essence of challenging (problem, aggressive) behaviour and management strategies.

Content of the module: what human behaviour is about, what kind of interaction there is between behaviours and surrounding factors, how the two interact with each other. Understanding when conduct can be called challenging. Conduct observation, intervention strategies and translation into practice.

Duration of the module: full course – 4 working days. The duration of the course may be changed as needed.

After completing the module, the trainees will be able to:

  • Identify challenging behaviour;
  • Identify the causes of challenging behaviour;
  • Manage challenging behaviour;
  • Prevent challenging behaviour.
  1. First aid and healthy lifestyle

Goal of the module:Teaching trainees to independently and correctly render first aid; studying healthy lifestyle.

Content of the module:

I first aid: epilepsy, burn, allergy, bone fracture, bleeding, and bite.

II body hygiene: hair, skin, hands, feet, teeth, eyes, ears, nails.

III healthy lifestyle: alcohol, tobacco, narcotic drugs, immunodeficiency virus, sexually transmitted diseases.

IV diseases: infectious, digestive, skin diseases. Healthy nutrition.

Duration of the module: full course – 3 working days.

After completing the module, the trainees will be able to:

  • Administer adeqaute first aid before arrival of the doctor;
  • Translate healthy lifestyle into practice based on the theoretical knowledge;
  • Prevent certain diseases by observing hygienic standards.
  1. Principles of occupational therapy

Goal of the module: introducing trainto: importance of occupational therapy; principles and vision of the work of the occupational therapist; general principles of target-oriented activity and the importance of involving disabled people in the activity to increase the degree of their independence.

Helping trainees learn the correct holding and carrying techniques to increase safety, and understanding how important it is to stimulate the channels of sense as one of the behaviour management strategies.

Content of the module:

  • Correct holding/carrying techniques;
  • Bedsores and their prevention methods;
  • Sensory stimulation;
  • Target-oriented activities/as opposed to normal development activities; care techniques.

Duration of the module: full course – 2 working days. If necessary, the duration of the course may be changed.

After completing the module, the trainees will be able to:

  • Carry and lift disabled people correctly and safely;
  • Prevent bedsores from occurring due to physical disability;
  • Increase the degree of independence of disabled people by using the right techniques;
  • Understand sensory stimulation and how to use it in daily life.
  1. The rights of the children and disabled

Goal of the module: Introducing the core principles of the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the rights of disabled people. introducing information on organizations working on the rights of the child.

Content of the module:

  • The fundamental rights of the child according to the Convention;
  • Rights of disabled people ;
  • Employment of disabled people, the Labour Code of Georgia;
  • Introduction of organizations working on the rights of the child in Georgia.

Duration of the module: full course – 1 working day.

After completing the module, the trainees will be able to:

Protect the rights of the child and disabled people, identify and adequately react to the violations in the sphere.

  1. Disabled people and social work

Goal of the module: Helping social workers form a positive attitude toward disabled people; Introducing them to the specifics of the sphere, providing them with the information necessary for successful social work.

Content of the module:

  • Social and medical model;
  • Five tested values;
  • Mental disability classification, degrees, necessary assistance forms;
  • Integration and inclusion;
  • Disabiity behaviour, behavioural specifics, challenging behaviour and management of such behaviour;
  • Assessment of disabled people , problem identification, development of an action plan, intervention methods;
  • Effective communication;
  • Family work specifics.

Duration of the module: full course – 3 working days. If necessary, the duration of the course may be changed.

After completing the module, the trainees will be able to:

Successfully perform social work with disabled people and their families.
